It's been a few days since I've blogged last. I have learned a lot as an educator in the past couple of days. Most importantly the importance of Teachers being Leaders. It is my goal for the rest of the school year to ENCOURAGE and MENTOR you in examining your own TEACHING and INSTRUCTION. I hope to GUIDE you and INSPIRE you to know that as a teacher you are a leader! For this you should be PRAISED!!! Let's begin with some reflection... What is a Teacher Leader? (Please feel free to share your reflections by making a comment to this post.)
I'll start...A teacher leader is...
flexible
collaborative
a good listener
a risk taker

I believe the number one skill that can make someone a teacher leader is COLLABORATION..as Jennifer already mentioned. As quickly as education is changing and transforming, who we are, what we do, and our expectations are changing as well. I believe in order to face those changes head on, we have to rely on one another...our colleagues...the people who know us best and understand what we are going through. I believe collaboration is so important as a teacher leader..your great idea can be morphed with someone else's great idea and then this stellar idea is developed. Collaboration is so important!
I also think a strong teacher leader is POSITIVE. Obviously we are human and can not be positive everyday...but positivity is something that is mimicked and reflected upon and if we are not positive then our colleagues and our students especially will recognize that, thus creating a downward spiral of negativity which never leads to good things. So when times get tough, a great teacher leader will always see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Brandi,
Thank you so much for joining the conversation. I am so excited to continue to learn together on what makes a Teacher Leader and the reasons why we need all teachers to be leaders. Collaboration and positive attitudes help us to be encouraged in our many endeavors each day. I have to tell you that I think you are a leader in BOTH areas! We are a team on the same mission of doing what is best for learners! I can't wait to hear more of your ideas!

I think a teacher leader is someone who is a model for others (students and teachers). They work hard, collaborate with others, try new ideas, display professionalism, and reflect on what works best.

Thank you so much for commenting Magara! I love to LEARN from colleauges! I absolutely agree that Teacher Leaders are models for others but especially for their students! Yeah! Another key characteristic that your mentioned is REFLECTION! WIthout reflection we cannot see if what we are doing is working or not. Reflection is learning and leading! Thank you, thank you for your post! I can't wait to learn more from you! :)

I am an Instructional Resource Teacher at Olds Elementary in Raleigh, NC. I believe that "TEACHING is learning!" and that teachers have Multiple Teaching Intelligences. As teachers we develop each day. I hope this site serves to aid teachers on their pedagogical journey.
